Let’s bring constructive argument, so we can have close approximation to TRUTH.
Argument#1: There are two opposing schools of thought, among Autistic Parenting. The one which primarily anti-aba suggests that. “If your kid, cannot change for the world, let’s change the world for them”. That’s how the word “Inclusion” is born in first place. They started working on Educating Schools, Colleges, Hospitals, Airports, Shopping Malls, etc. how they can make sensory-friendly places for them or educate the entire staff, what to expect from them and how to handle it.
Argument#2: Almost all therapy centers across India offer “ABA” or some sort of behavioral intervention (that includes some popular programs conducted by NGOs), as a service. They don’t know the real fact, Parents visit Therapy centers because they want to hear the first words from their kids. They primarily want Speech and mostly Speech only.
Argument#3: Now, any parent who got to know that their kid is Autistic, will pay a visit to a nearest Therapy Center, to find out a speech Trainer. Soon or later, Trainer will start complaining, I cannot teach him if he cannot sit at one place, or if he cannot give me eye contact or follow to my instructions. Now, enters the ABA or any BT person, to do just that. But, in a Business point of view, this is an Add-on service. you have to pay for ABA as a separate module. In Marketing terms, we say cross-selling, In Therapist terms, they smartly convince client they are just using multi-disciplinary approach.
Argument#4: ABA is basically inspired from Animal Training Techniques. Yes, you heard me right. Go Google yourself. Let’s observe Animals in Circus, they have to sit in one place, follow the instructions and perform an act. You know where else, our kids have to do, something like that. In SCHOOL. So, ABA is able to survive with its ill effects so far, because, Autistics have to go to School and sit quiet, follow instructions, and do homework. So, they can compete with their peers (Mostly Neurotypicals). Even animals don’t like to be tamed (especially the wild ones), Horses when kept in stable for longer duration are more restless when compared to horses that are wild and free roaming around in green patches. All the non-verbal animals who performed in Circus, their trauma went unaccounted, because, we never know their side of the story. I repeat because they are non-verbal.
Argument#5: Most ABA Practitioners (that includes parents) have invested lot of money and time in it, but you are dealing with wrong audience. Autism is a Neurological Condition, more we tend to repair, more it will backfire us. Because we cannot really understand the complex nature of Neural Network. Trust me, Psychology is a beautiful subject, you can try to see, where it works, Probably try your methods elsewhere, may be on Drug Addicts, Alcoholics or chain smokers , or how ABA methods can work on Employee productivity or motivates a person’s fitness goals with the same reinforcement techniques, but not on our kids (especially the non-speaking ones).
Last but not least, In history we have seen “Left-Handers” as awkward and weird and books written on how to convert them to “Right-handers”, now In 2022, left-handers are considered as blessing to parents, because the creative pursuits they might take. So, we never know, how things turn out in future. Let this post shall be the beginning in creating a New world, where they co-exist and live in harmony among us. Signing off, Pal.
